NATALYA PETROVICH

Dr. Natalya Petrovich was a doctor at the state psychiatric hospital near Leningrad, a facility which housed both psychiatric patients and political prisoners. She had once wanted to be a surgeon, but it was a difficult career choice for a woman. In her role at the hospital she exhibited strong medical ethics, disapproving of the use of drugs over treatment. She also did not enjoy acting as an agent of the Internal Security, and she distanced herself from the interrogation of political prisoners, the specialty of Dr. Suvarin.
When Pete Thorton and MacGyver portrayed doctor and patient to gain access to the hospital to rescue Russian dissident Alexander Karsov, Natalya befriended Pete. Dr. Suvarin discovered that drugs had been stolen from a locked cabinet, and he assumed that Pete and Natalya had conspired together to sell the drugs on the black market. He threatened to have them arrested, but as MacGyver's plan to rescue Karsov proceeded, Natalya learned Pete's true purpose, and she agreed to help.
The rescue mission was successful, and Karsov and many other patients and prisoners were able to walk out of the hospital to freedom. Natalya realized that she couldn't remain at the hospital, but she chose instead to remain in Russia, intending to support Karsov's work to change the government.
